Barnali Chattopadhyay is an internationally acclaimed Indian classical vocalist associated with the Banaras gharana tradition. Her musical world is rooted in rigorous classical practice while remaining open to poetry, cinema, collaboration, education and the healing possibilities of sound.
Inspired and guided by great exponents including Padma Vibhushan Girija Devi, Vidushi Purnima Chaudhary of the Banaras gharana and Padma Bhushan Shobha Gurtu of the Jaipur tradition, Barnali developed a musical identity where discipline and emotional expression exist together.

People often ask where Barnali’s music comes from. The answer begins much earlier than the concert stage.
As a child, while the world around her moved through friendships and games, she found companionship in riyaz. Music became the language of her inner world long before she could completely explain what it meant.
By the age of eleven, she understood that singing was not simply something she enjoyed. The happiness her voice brought to others revealed something deeper — a calling.
Life would bring loneliness, disappointment, changing relationships and personal struggles. Yet music remained. It became strength in moments of weakness, companionship in solitude and prayer when ordinary words felt inadequate.
That relationship continues today. She is still learning, still practising and still singing with the devotion that began in childhood.

Barnali collaborated with filmmaker, artist and cultural visionary Muzaffar Ali on a specially curated musical project connected with poetic works attributed to Wajid Ali Shah, bringing poetry, composition and classical interpretation into conversation.

Her journey has also included a musical collaboration connected with a composition for a Subhash Ghai film project.
For Barnali, preserving classical music also means teaching it. Her practice continues through an institution devoted to teaching, grooming and strengthening the roots of India’s rich musical lineage.
The intention is not simply to teach compositions. It is to nurture listening, discipline, sensitivity, musical character and the patience required to live with an art form over time.

An Independence Day evening in Hyderabad where classical tradition met Bollywood nostalgia and contemporary fusion, on a stage shared with musicians from several traditions.
Barnali sang from her Heeramandi repertoire before turning to thumri — Rangi Saree and Barsan Laagi Sawan — on the same evening she received the Sangitanjaly Excellence Award.
